Segmenting Three Letter Words

Segmenting Three Letter Words
Created by Amy Call
Length of Lesson: 30 minutes
Grade Level: Kindergarten

Reading: Foundational Skills Standard 1; d. Recognize and name all upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
Reading: Foundational Skills Standard 2; b. Count, produce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.

Learning Outcome: By the end of the 30 minute lesson, the Kindergarten students will be able to segment basic three letter words throughout call and response activities as well as movement responses.

Materials: Drum. Variety of colored scarves. List of words: Cat, Dog, Mat, Sat, Fan, Man, Net, Leg, Rat, Bag, Gum, Let, Bat, Nat, Vet, Jet, Pet, Pig, Hen, Pen, Can, Ten, Tin, Tan, Pot, Pin, and Fox.

Experience/Identity: Warm the kids up with the “Alphabet Sound Song” by having them make the shape of each letter in the song. This will get them thinking about all the letters and their sounds for the progression of the lesson.

Explore/Investigate:
  • Pick one of the words from the list and write down each letter on the board. Have the students sound out the word together.
    • Have everyone make the shape of each letter in order while sounding out the word. Now write the word in the air with different body parts. Now everyone move like the word (or make a shape like the word).
    • With a new word, invite three students to pick up a scarf, they will then each make a shape with the scarf to match one of the letters. The whole class will now make a shape of each letter with their body while sounding out the word.
    • Exp. C (make a C shape) A (make an A shape) T (make a T shape).
  • Now practice writing the words in the air with different body parts. The students with scarves can use the scarf to write out the word in the air.
  • Now have everyone move low to the ground like a cat with quick, unexpected pounces.
  • Repeat this with as many words as you have time for.

Create/Perform:
  • Have the students think of a short word that they know and allow each of the students to have a scarf. Have the students perform for each other by drawing out the letters in the air, then move like and/or create a shape of the word they chose.

Connect/Analyze:

  • Bring the students together and remind them that sounding out words is how we learn to read. Have the students think of one more three letter word and sound it out together while making the shapes of each letter in their seat.
